History and Curiosities of La Croix des Gardes Park

La Croix des Gardes, besides its natural beauty and viewpoints, is associated with the region’s history: firstly, its name is said to come from the legend that, in 1525, King Francis Ist had a garrison of Swiss guards stationed at the top of the hill where the cross stands today. They were tasked with monitoring the sea and the movements of pirate ships. The history of the place is also closely linked with England: in December 1834, Lord Henry Brougham, a British politician and writer, stopped in Cannes due to a cholera epidemic in Nice. Following this, he decided to buy a plot of land west of Le Suquet and had a villa built in the name of his daughter, Éléonore-Louise. A few years later, in 1837, the British general John Taylor had Saint-Georges Castle built: this marked the beginning of a long series of holiday residences for the British aristocracy, which led to La Croix des Gardes being nicknamed the “English Quarter.”

Another curiosity to visit: the Château de La Croix des Gardes! Since the beginning of the 20th century, this château has established itself as one of the most emblematic estates on the French Riviera, majestically dominating the city of Cannes, offering uninterrupted views from sunrise to sunset. In addition to its 25-hectare immaculate Italian gardens, the Château de la Croix des Gardes offers hidden trails, architectural wonders, and a true gastronomic journey with Michelin-starred chefs. Its assets made it the jewel of the Belle Époque: built in 1919 by Swiss industrialist Paul Girod, the Château’s history rose to mythical status when it became the sumptuous setting for Alfred Hitchcock’s film To Catch a Thief. Starring Cary Grant and Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco. Today, and after several transformations over the decades, it is possible to visit it, but only by invitation, in absolute privacy that harks back to the last century.
