It runs in a straight line for <\/span><b>2.6 kilometres<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, connecting Cannes to the towns of Cannet, Mougins, Valbonne and Grasse. And, if you continue onto <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avenue de Campon<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you\u2019ll end up on the A8 motorway (known as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A8 du Soleil<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) which will take you to Marseille, Aix-en-Provence and Nice.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <strong>boulevard has a rather unique history<\/strong>: it is the result of a real estate promotional campaign designed by banker Henri Germain on behalf of the real estate company <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Fonci\u00e8re Lyonnaise<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. His love for Cannes and his belief that many wealthy people would come and spend the winter in the Midi region of South East France led Germain, through his company, to buy all available land north of the railway tracks between 1875 and 1880. After bringing an architect on board, he decided to design a 26-metre wide, 2,600-metre-long avenue starting from Cannes train station and heading in a straight line towards the town of Suquet. The avenue was <\/span><b>completed in 1883<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and named <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boulevard de la Fonci\u00e8re-Lyonnais<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A committee later decided to change the name in honour of President Sadi Carnot on 31st July 1894, one month after his assassination. The results of the project were mixed.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It turned out that few people were interested in buying land to build holiday homes and, to make matters worse, the First World War put a stop to all real estate projects. It would take 25 years for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Credit Lyonnais<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the bank founded by Henri Germain, to sell all the land. Starting at the beginning of Boulevard Carnot, next to the train station, you\u2019ll notice two strange-looking buildings: building no. 2, which is the old <\/span><b><i>H\u00f4tel du Louvre<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and building no. 8, one of the buildings that was built before 1900. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On either side of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Place Vauban<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you\u2019ll see two symmetrical buildings which act as a sort of grand entranceway. One of these buildings, building no. 11, houses the prestigious 4-star <\/span><b><i>H\u00f4tel Cavendish<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Continuing along the boulevard, you\u2019ll walk past building no. 19, which is the Palace of Justice, with its gorgeous architecture. It is also the seat of the county court. For history lovers, it\u2019s worth noting that, in addition to building no. 8, more pre-1900 buildings can be found at no. 26, 42, 50, 65, 66, 67, 71 and 93.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Building no. 96, <\/span><b>Carnot High School<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, marks the end of the boulevard. The school was built in 1913 by architect Camille Mari. Finally, next to the school, you\u2019ll find <\/span><b>Square Carnot<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a green space to relax and enjoy the tropical atmosphere with a fountain. Boulevard Carnot is long and well-sign-posted, so you should be able to find it easily.
